A freight station in it's early days Avondale began to grow as an agricultural town. The area became known as Arizona's salad bowl. The land produced lettuce, carrots, cauliflower, onions and many other vegetables. The melons, dates and citrus grown here are among the best in the state. Cotton, wheat, barley and alfalfa are also produced. Avondale is located 15 miles west of downtown Phoenix and covers 24 square miles. Avondale holds on to its small town feeling, due in most part to the city's planning of its growth for the future. Avondale's pride and joy is the Phoenix International Raceway. The raceway has a capacity of over 100,000 and holds several major auto races. The track has been rated one of the fastest one-mile ovals in the world.
