NORTHEAST VALLEY -STATE ASSUMING OVERSIGHT OF FREEWAY PHOTO ENFORCEMENT PROGRAMThe Arizona Department of Public Safety took is taking over administration of Loop 101 photo enforcement cameras. The program will transition from the city of Scottsdale to DPS during the month of July. The shift to DPS administration of the freeway program comes after the City Council's approval last month of an agreement with the agency. The city will contract with its vendor to provide a photo enforcement system on the freeway, but DPS will be responsible for oversight of the system and will issue citations. Freeway citations will continue to be processed through Scottsdale City Court. The transition to DPS also involves a transition to a new vendor,
American Traffic Solutions, and replacement of current equipment operated by the
current vendor, Redflex Traffic Systems. ARIZONA OFFICE OF TOURISM ANNOUNCES ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MARATHON ECONOMIC IMPACTThe Arizona Office of Tourism Director Margie Emmermann officially announced the results of the marathon’s economic impact study along with event organizer Elite Racing Inc., and mayors from the race’s host cities of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe. The Fourth Annual P.F. Chang’s Rock n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & ½ Marathon held this past January generated an estimated $44 million to the state’s economy. More than 34,000 runners registered for the 2007 race, enabling it to also contribute more than $2 million in tax revenues. This level of spending by the participants of the event helped produce an employment impact of 1,230 jobs within Maricopa County. This study was last conducted after the inaugural race in 2004, when the economic impact was estimated at $41 million, including $1.1 million in tax revenues. For the 2007 event, more than half of the runners were from out-of-state, which means that a significant number of race participants were spending money on hotels, food, shopping and other items in the Valley. The top five states of origin for out-of-state runners were: California, Illinois, Colorado, Wisconsin, and Washington. More than 21 percent of out-of-state respondents reported traveling outside the Phoenix Metro area during their stay, a significant increase from the 17 percent that traveled throughout the state in 2004. Sedona was the most frequently visited community with 45.5 percent of participants traveling to the destination, followed by Tucson at 28.4 percent. Native American Tribal lands accounted for 21.8 percent of additional travel, while Flagstaff and Williams captured 18.5 percent of travel outside Phoenix. The next race will be held Jan. 13, 2008 McDOWELL SONORAN PRESERVE CELEBRATES 13TH ANNIVERSARY IN OCTOBERThis October marks the thirteenth anniversary of Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve. With the continuous support of Scottsdale voters, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve today includes 13,000+ acres of the planned 36,000-acre Preserve covering roughly one-third of the city. The city, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve Commission and the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy invite you to celebrate "It's Your Preserve," a month-long commemoration of the conservation and preservation of the flora and fauna, archeologically significant areas and 100+ miles of trails within the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. |
